Train stations across the country will benefit from improved cycling facilities thanks to £15 million of new government funding, Transport Minister Baroness Kramer announced today (4 July 2014) on the eve of the Tour de France coming to the UK.
The improvements will make it easier for people to ride bicycles and use trains by providing more and better cycle parking and other cycle-friendly facilities at railway stations, helping cut pollution and ease congestion on our roads.
The minister announced the funding as she officially opened the new £850,000 Sheffield Cycle Hub - a flagship facility that provides 415 bike spaces alongside changing rooms and repair facilities at the city’s train station.
Isn’t this summer weather wonderful? There’s barely a cloud in the sky, there’s a gentle summer breeze wafting through the trees, and it’s lovely and light in the evenings.
If you’re stuck in traffic on your way to work or crammed onto the train with hundreds of sweaty, frustrated fellow commuters, the summer weather is anything but pleasant. And while you quite like the idea of dusting off your bicycle and cycling the ten or so miles to work instead of driving, the chances are that unless you’re a lycra-clad cycling fanatic who already rides to and from work every day you don’t really fancy the idea of getting hot and sweaty to do so.

Tools to help influence travel behaviour
Employers have much to gain by developing plans to support staff in how they commute and travel on business. A proactive approach can enhance staff retention and recruitment, reduce parking demand, improve business reputation and lower business costs. However sometimes even with a strong business case, implementing changes can be difficult. This Forum will focus on tools to assist the change process in the workplace using examples based on travel to and at work.
Commuters can make summer savings on park and ride services to travel from as little as £1.48 per day based on a 6-day week.
Offers will be available when presenting the driver with a promotional voucher between June 2 and July 11.
The tickets can be used for unlimited day travel between the park and rides sites at Birstall, Enderby and Meynell’s Gorse and Leicester.
10-day ticket will be available to buy for £22 (usual price £26)
4-weekly ticket will be available to buy for £35.50 (usual price £42)
The vouchers can be downloaded from www.quicksilverbus.co.uk/eblast or can be picked up from terminal buildings at Birstall and Enderby. They are also available on park and ride buses and other selected local outlets (while stocks last). Alternatively, vouchers can be requested by calling the helpline on 0116 305 0002.
Passes can be purchased at any time during the offer period, even on the last days of the promotion and are subject to terms and conditions.
The park and ride services are operated by Leicestershire County and Leicester City Councils.
