De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) is a Higher Education Institution in the heart of Leicester. Originally founded as the Leicester School of Art in 1870, the University has evolved though many incarnations including the Leicester Colleges of Art and Technology and Leicester Polytechnic. The latter officially became De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) in June 1992.
The University now provides quality education to 22,500 students across four Faculties – Arts, Design and Humanities; Business and Law; Health and Life Sciences and Technology - and employs more than 3,000 staff. The University was recently awarded TEF Gold status in recognition of its outstanding teaching and in 2017 was ranked 13th out of 154 UK Universities and Colleges, by People and Planet, for its environmental and ethical performance.
What was the primary challenge or set of challenges you faced?
A significant percentage of staff and students incorporate cycling into their daily travel to DMU. Therefore, there is always a high demand for secure, covered cycle storage on campus. Before the opening of the Vijay Patel Cycle Store, demand outstripped supply, and the number of secure storage options available to students was very limited.
During the recent multi-million pound campus transformation, DMU was proud to take advantage of the opportunity to enhance its existing cycle storage facilities by creating a new indoor cycle storage facility for both staff and students. The storage is capable of storing 128 bikes, complete with gas-assist two-tier racking, lockers and a cycle pump and repair station. It can be found on the lower ground floor of the flagship £43m Vijay Patel Building, which is surrounded by a series of public spaces linking DMU’s city centre campus with the River Soar.

Which offer did you take advantage of?
- 10% off CyclePods.
What benefits did the offer provide?
- The 10% discount on CyclePods products saved the University £2,256 across three products (Gas-assisted Two-Tier Cycle Racks, Public XL Pump and Public Bike Repair Stand).
Did this offer help you achieve particular qualitative or quantitative benefits as a result?
- As the storage facility has only just opened we are unable to determine whether cycling numbers have increased; however, the opening of the cycle storage has visibly reduced the number of bikes locked to street furniture on campus, and has attracted many positive comments from staff and students.
The discounts offered by SmartGo Leicester have enabled De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) to significantly expand and enhance the support it provides to staff and students who commute to the University in a sustainable manner. The CyclePods Two-Tier Cycle Racks in our new storage facility have maximised the space available to us, resulting in a convenient and secure cycle storage location in the heart of our newly revitalised campus. The feedback from both staff and students regarding the new facility has been extremely positive.
